Education and Experience
Hassan A. Abbas earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating from this institution in 1988, he enrolled at the De Paul University College of Law. He graduated with his Juris Doctor in 1991. After becoming licensed to practice law in the state of Illinois, he opened his own practice. He continues to practice law privately today.
Hassan A. Abbas maintains active memberships in the Chicago Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association. He has been a member of both of these organizations since 1991. In 1988, he was honored with lifetime membership in the Golden Key International Honor Society.
Hassan A. Abbas is an international lawyer who has practiced for over twenty five years. Mr. Abbas’ business and corporate experience includes the formation of business enterprises, including corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, limited partnerships and other business enterprises. He has helped businesses with capital structure issues and has advised on immigration issues in the United States and nationality law in the European Union, and he has advised companies with business registrations, individual visas, and residency issues and provided counsel on various compliance matters. Mr. Abbas has assisted businesses with routine business transactions including banking relations, employment contracts, consulting agreements, non-disclosure agreements, supplier contracts, patent, trademark or copyright matters, and other business contracts affecting an organization. He has worked with groups interested in franchise-based organisations, seeking the development of franchise locations such as in the restaurant and retail and supermarkets business, and he has assisted in import and export matters and trade law.
Mr. Abbas’ commercial experience includes helping businesses with purchase and sale transactions in various industries including property law, medical products, alimentation and foodstuffs, and real estate investment. Mr. Abbas is currently providing counsel to bondholders who have claims against sovereign nations relative to sovereign debt and bonds. Prior to practicing law, Mr. Abbas worked for several years with his family in the diamond industry where he developed an extensive understanding of precious stones and diamonds and commercial law and issues related to purchase and sale transactions. He is also a Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America.
Mr. Abbas’ extensive business background has allowed him to serve clients professionally and to obtain the results sought by the clients. His Beirut law office has been established to provide consultation in complex international matters, and he has advised banks, American citizens, green card holders or permanent U.S. residents on tax compliance matters, such as under the FATCA law (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act).
Mr. Abbas is of Lebanese origin but has lived in many different countries and speaks English, French, Arabic and Italian. He has a diverse background and has represented individuals, businesses, and families in a variety of legal matters in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the United States. In Chicago, Mr. Abbas was also active in providing indigent persons with pro bono legal services and criminal defense to innocent individuals in court.
